Client success story

Discover how one client in the energy industry with a fleet of 3,000 vehicles set and achieved carbon neutrality goals through an EV pilot program.

Talk to an EV fleet expert

Situation

  • The client aimed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 without relying on carbon offsets as an EV100 member.

  • Their fleet of ~3,000 vehicles, including sedans, SUVs, and pickups, was split between the U.S. and Canada.

  • Transitioning to electric vehicles was critical to meeting their goals but required a clear and practical roadmap.

Solution

  • Launched an EV pilot program with 20 EVs deployed in the U.S. and 20 EVs in Canada.

  • Conducted total cost of ownership analysis to ensure financial viability.

  • Installed tailored charging infrastructure to support operations.

  • Provided driver education and implemented an energy cost reimbursement program.

  • Developed a multi-year fleet replacement plan for scalable electrification.

Impact

  • Zero Scope 1 tailpipe emissions achieved for pilot vehicles.

  • 34% of the fleet identified as EV-ready by 2025.

Cost analysis results:

  • 10% cost increase over 48 months transitioning from GMC Terrain to Ford Mach-E (CA).

  • 20% cost savings over 48 months, transitioning from Chevrolet Silverado to Ford Lightning (CA).

What is an EV fleet?

An EV fleet is a group of electric vehicles (EVs) used by a business or organization for operations or transportation needs. These can include both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in electric hybrids (PHEVs). BEVs are powered by electricity stored in rechargeable batteries, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional gasoline or diesel-powered fleets. PHEVs are powered by both stored electricity and gasoline when necessary. EV fleets help reduce emissions and operating costs.

What is the best Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) for fleets?

The best EVSE (commonly known as a charger) for fleets typically offers fast charging speeds, scalability, and smart features like energy use monitoring. Level 2 chargers are widely used for their balance of efficiency and cost, but DC fast chargers or Level 3 chargers may be preferred for time-sensitive operations. The choice depends on fleet size, usage patterns, and charging needs.

What percentage of fleet vehicles are electric?

Currently, the percentage of electric fleet vehicles varies globally but is steadily growing due to sustainability goals and government incentives. According to BloombergNEF’s (BNEF) latest Electric Vehicle Outlook and associated updates, as of now, only about 4% of the global passenger vehicle fleet is electric (combining battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles). This percentage is expected to rise significantly in the coming years.
