Fleet safety tip: Roundabout safety

Have you noticed more and more roundabouts on the roads? They are being used more by planners, because they are statistically safer:

article thumb main
  • They reduce fatal crashes by 90%
  • They reduce injury crashes by 75%
  • They reduce pedestrian/vehicle crashes by 30 – 40%

Use these suggested guidelines for driving through a roundabout:

  • Slow down as you approach and choose your lane
  • When you see a gap in traffic, enter the circle
  • Yield to traffic already circulating – those in the roundabout have the right of way
  • Stay in your lane and use your right-turn signal to indicate your intention to exit
  • Assume trucks need all the available space — don't try to pass them
  • If an emergency vehicle enters the roundabout, safely pull the right and let it pass
  • Watch for pedestrians and cyclists

As always, be safe!
